Question: When paying a condolence (shiva) call, should I bring a gift or flowers to the family?

P.C., Providence

Dear P.C.,

Except for food for a meal of condolence, which many people bring, it is not customary to bring anything else with you to the house of shiva.

Your presence is the main thing. Share your memories with the family. If you wish to do something extra, you may want to make a suitable donation to the family’s favorite charity in memory of the deceased.

Questions are welcomed and encouraged. Please send questions to: ShalomChapel@aol.com or by mail to Ask the Director, c/o Shalom Memorial Chapel, 1100 New London Ave., Cranston, R.I. 02920.
