QUESTION: What is a green burial?

W.R., California

Dear W.R.,

A green burial, also called a natural burial, involves burying the decedent with as little environmental impact as possible. For example, using biodegradable shrouds and caskets of all wood construction would be considered “green.” Jewish burials have been “green” for over 5,000 years.
