Rhode Island shoppers support a cause and give back to the community

From Dec. 15-18, StandWithUs Rhode Island participated in the third annual IsrAction Day 2016. During this global grassroots campaign, shoppers buy Israeli goods in local supermarkets and donate the purchases to the needy in their community. IsrAction accomplishes three major goals: people stand up for Israel with their purchases, fight back against discriminatory boycotts and support their local community.

“It’s fun for the entire family and a perfect way to engage in a positive action,” said Bracha Stuart, executive director, StandWithUs Rhode Island. “Everyone loved sampling the delicious products, and well, who doesn’t like to shop? We enjoyed dropping off the goods and were so appreciative of the opportunity to support Israel and help the less fortunate in the community. It was gratifying to realize how many partners we have and more so, that everyone wants to be counted in for IsrAction Day 2017.”

Collections of Israeli goods took place at Eastside Marketplace, Congregation Beth Sholom, and Wingate Residences in Providence, and Tamarisk Assisted Living in Warwick. Everything collected was donated to the local Kosher food bank.

“It was great to see the Rhode Island community come together to feed the less fortunate Jews,” said Ken Schneider, chairperson of The Louis & Goldie Chester Full Plate Kosher Food Pantry. “We are always grateful to receive food.”

IsrAction Day is the brainchild of Sussex Friends of Israel and Northwest Friends of Israel, two British-based pro-Israel groups. It quickly won the support of London’s Jewish Chronicle and Jewish communal organizations across Great Britain.

StandWithUs is a 15-year-old international Israel education organization that supports people around the world who want to educate their campuses and communities about Israel. SWU has chapters throughout the U.S. including the Midwest, Israel, the UK, Canada and Australia.
